I can't tell news from fake news
I can't tell news from fake news
Not everything you see or read online is true. You may already know that, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between real information and fake news. Think conspiracy theories, crazy "facts" on TikTok or edited videos that seem real through artificial intelligence (AI). Fake news is everywhere. It's important that you learn how to recognize it. Not to scare you, but so you can be stronger online.
What can you do?
What can you do?
Ask yourself the question, "Is this real?"
Do you see or hear something that sounds extreme, too beautiful or just too crazy? Then ask yourself:
- Who is this message coming from?
- Is it from a reliable source?
- Do you see it on other, well-known websites or only in one vague place?
Doubting is smart. It means you are thinking carefully.
Talk about it
Do you see something that makes you think, "Is this right?" Talk about it with someone you trust. A friend, parent or mentor can think along. Or maybe you can help someone who believes something is wrong. Together, you'll learn more.
Check the facts
There are websites to help you spot fake news. A good site isIs That Really So?. There you'll learn how fake news works, how to recognize deepfakes and why some posts are intentionally misleading.
Still in doubt?
Sometimes you just don't know what to believe. Especially when influencers or people you follow all say something different. Talk about it with someone who listens without judgment. That relieves and provides clarity.
